Scott, You can use the web interface to set the house mode to "mute", which will cause it to shut up. :) The next release of MH will have code that Bruce and I worked on to make MH more (for lack of a better term) context sensitive. If a command comes from IM, then ONLY reply to IM, unless the command specifically overrides this. I believe this will help you in your goal.
