While I was digging around the Winamp developers site I ran 
across the following information:

There are a number of numerical commands that can be sent using 
windows messages that provide substantial control (and querying) 
capability.  I'm not very familar with the SendKeys command so I 
can't really say if they accomplish the same thing or not.  

I am currently putting together the subroutines that will allow 
access to these commands in a format like:

		winamp('command', 'data');

I've demonstrated the basic communication with the Winamp 
program so far.  When I get the subroutines put together (more) 
properly I will post it for those who are interested.

There is a command to query the position in the playlist that 
should do this.  Also there is a command that returns the status of 
the playback: paused, playing, or stopped.
