As noted previously, sometimes an autosave file will contain an error compared to the user-saved file. If you load the autosave, then you keep the error but lose the error-free file.

Could loading the auto save convert the previously saved file into a backup--say with the suffix MKY_prev or RVL_prev ? That would take the risk out of loading an autosaved file.

How do you mean? The original file is not overwritten until you explicitly save it. You should have seen that the autosave file had an error before getting to that point.

I’m thinking of bug tracking here: errors generated by bugs rather than a
user making a mistake, which is like to keep a record of and then send it
      to you.

And the autosave feature updating the # file before the user spots the
      error as well.

Just rename the existing # file as .backup and then those issues disappear.

This is not a major issue though— backlog it until we can afford to hire
      some junior developers!
