[Mingw-users] Why does mingw use visual c library and calls itself completely open source

The core of mingw contains proprietary closed source microsoft visual c
runtime library. So is it dignified in calling itself completely open
source.

By that definition there is NO completely open source SW on any closed
source OS, be it M$ Windows or Apple OSX or whatever. Simply because
any program for such OS will include calls to closed source OS calls.

Maybe your understanding of what open source means and what mingw is
might need some adjustment.

msvcrt.dll is a system library, and even GPL allows to link against
non-free system libraries, without violating the GPL copyleft.

Aside from the answers you've got already, there's an effort to write
a free software replacement for msvcrt. It's called Ironcrate (the
name is not final).
Instead of [wrongly] accusing people of being dishonest, you can go on
and help with the development.

I wouldn't accuse them of accusing people. It's good that people try to
understand things, and I believe they understand better now.
