I and two co-workers here have been trying to install MinGW for the past two weeks, using mingw-get-inst. This is really getting to me, having recommended to use MinGW as the C++ compiler. mingw-get always complains about unavailable files and the resulting installation cannot be used. The cause for this problem may be sourceforge, and it may be related to the source forge mirrors that are active when downloading from Germany. Earnie suggested that it's a transient problem related to slow response times, but then I should have had some success sometime during the past two weeks. If the files that mingw-get tries to retrieve are really there, then maybe mingw-get should be more robust with respect to these timing issues. latest mingw-get-log follows. However, since mingw-get-inst is no more than a wrapper for mingw-get itself, there's really no reason why it shouldn't work just as well as using mingw-get directly. I will offer one suggestion, if you do use mingw-get-inst; *never* accept its offer to use bundled catalogues; *always* request it to update to the latest available. > mingw-get always complains about unavailable files and the resulting > installation cannot be used. > > The cause for this problem may be sourceforge, and it may be related > to the source forge mirrors that are active when downloading from > Germany. I don't know what is going on with you, in Germany, but for me, in the United Kingdom, via a company proxy with internet access through a server located in Paris, France, I don't have the slightest problem. Immediately after receiving this mail, I downloaded the current version of mingw-get, selecting the zip format package, and extracted it into a completely clean sandbox. Within that sandbox, I then ran (in cmd.exe) C:\> cd sandbox\bin C:\sandbox\bin> mingw-get install g++ msys-base This caused mingw-get to run through a complete catalogue update, followed by download and installation of g++-4.7.2, complete with all of its dependencies, and of a basic MSYS. Everything downloaded and installed successfully, without the slightest murmur of complaint, and the resulting installation works perfectly. I can only conclude that the problem lies with your own internet service, or with SF's service in Germany, so there's not much I can do to help; you will need to pursue it with SF directly. > Earnie suggested that it's a transient problem related to slow > response times, but then I should have had some success sometime > during the past two weeks. > > If the files that mingw-get tries to retrieve are really there, then > maybe mingw-get should be more robust with respect to these timing > issues. mingw-get really does try *very* hard, to establish a connection for each and every individual download file URL; it performs up to 25 retries *per* *file*, with each attempt persisting for the full time out duration as specified in your internet explorer configuration. However, in you case, you seem to be getting 404 responses, which is an explicit "URL does not exist" response, so no number of retries is likely to succeed. Every one of your failing URLs appears to be valid, and is successfully resolved for me; you need to pursue the issue from your own end, perhaps with reference to SF support. I'd like to be able to help you, but I really don't see what I can do. -- Regards, Keith. |

Regarding the suggestion that we might have tried simultaneous downloads which led to sourceforge blocking us: No, we have not done this simultaneously. I had one success yesterday when selecting the "Download latest repository catalogues" option. Everything downloaded successfully. However, I did not have the same success with the pre-packaged catalogue option, and I was not able to repeat that success with the "Download latest repository catalogues" option. mingw-get.exe: *** WARNING *** http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mingw/mingw32- libtool.xml.lzma?download: opened with unexpected status: code = 404 I also tried downloading, in parallel to mingw-get working, a URL that previously failed to download in mingw-get, with wget. wget downloaded the same URL without a problem, repeatedly. Are you still experiencing problems with this? It is a shame that you never did contribute to that SF discussion. Lacking your input, the ticket was closed, concluding that you had hit a limit, imposed by the particular mirror provider, on frequency of requesting individual files for download. With that in mind, I've incorporated a geometrically increasing delay between retries, for failed downloads; this feature is present within the latest snapshot of mingw-get, from http://tinyurl.com/md6qt8x Could you please try this? -- Regards, Keith. |

Where do I find this time-out duration configuration option? I'd like to raise it, but cannot find a timeout setting in "Internet Options". When I ask google I find registry hacking instructions. No, but it does tend to support the SF theory that trying to grab too many files in too quick succession may fail, due to throttling. This really is the sort of information you should be sharing on the SF support ticket, but you'd previously said: >> I created the following SourceForge support ticket. Sourceforge (at least some download mirrors) protect themselves against mass downloads from botnets. After a certain ammount of file downloads, the sourceforge download mirror will respond with status code 404 - Not Found, despite the URL in question being valid. The mingw-get-setup tool downloads individual MinGW packages separately from sourceforge and is prone to run into this sourceforge download limitation (again, at least for some download mirrors). As a consequence, it was impossible to install MinGW at all during most of 2013 for users that were directed to affected download mirrors. With the current release of mingw-get-setup (0.6.2-beta-20131004-1) it is possible to install mingw unsing mingw-get-setup despite sourceforge blocking some of the downloads and the setup tool reporting the error. The solution is to wait for several minutes when the setup tool is displaying the "unexpected status: code 404" error in a message box, before clicking OK. Waiting for several minutes will apparently remove my IP from sourceforge's blacklist. I tried waiting for 5 minutes, and this seems enough. After clicking ok, the setup tool will not try to redownload the package that failed (which would be nice, BTW), but download the remaining packages. Do not try to Download the missing package manually and place it into the correct directory, as the setup tool will not use it. During installation of the downloaded packages, the packages that failed to download will cause installation errors. To rectify these errors, after waiting another 5 minutes, I click apply changes once more to download and install the packages that failed previously. Note that this strategy might not work if you use a proxy or similar, as other users of that proxy might continue to use sourceforge while you do the waiting. |
