[Mingw-users] Function prototypes and headers

Hi,

When I tried to compile a header file and its C file, I've been surprised to
see an error that I wasn't getting with any other compiler. There are the
files and the error :

file user_number_input.h :
 
#ifndef H_USER_NUMBER_INPUT
#define H_USER_NUMBER_INPUT
 
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
 
float getfloat();
 
#endif
 
 
file user_number_input.c : 
 
#include "user_number_input.h"
 
float getfloat()
{
	float x;
	char a[32];
	fgets(a, 31, stdin);
	if (a[0]==0)
		return 0.0;
	else
	{
		x=atof(a);
		return x;
	}
}
 
error : 
 
$ gcc -c user_number_input.c      
user_number_input.c:4: error: redefinition of 'getfloat'
user_number_input.h:8: error: previous definition of 'getfloat' was here


Note that commenting out float getfloat(); in the header file (in line 7,
and not 8 as in the compiler's error message) doesn't change a thing, the
error message remains the same.

What version of GCC?  I copied and pasted your example files,
unchanged, and I cannot reproduce this with

  $ gcc --version
  gcc.exe (GCC) 3.4.5 (mingw special)

It compiles fine, using

  $ gcc -c user_number_input.c

with no errors reported.

Mine is 3.4.2. I just installed Mingw 5.1.3. I asked some developer friends,
none of them could reproduce the error with their toolchains, and suggested
that mine was broken, but how could it be broken, I just installed it?

It happens, sometimes.  A corrupt download, perhaps?  Try wiping it, and 
install again.
