The recent update of the stix package supports LaTeX and pdfLatex. However, the map file stix.map is not enabled automatically. After manual enabling, LaTeX and pdfLaTeX work. However, xelatex results in bit-mapped fonts and lualatex uses the type1 fonts rather than the opentype fonts.

I've just realized that the second part of my report is spurious; stix.sty doesn't support xelatex and lualatex; the user must use fontspec.

I've been in touch with Khaled Hosny, who is responsible for stix.sty. It was designed to support xelatex and lualatex use of the type1 fonts. And on TeXLive, it works as intended. So the appearance of type3 fonts on MiKTeX does indicate there's a bug, presumably in the updating of font maps.
