This program says mic on / off, but does not actually mute. I have tried this with skype open and skype closed because I thought that skype might be trying to control the mic, but it is not.
I have attached a test file that shows no difference in mic on/ mic off.
Same issue, micmute was working properly then sudenly stopped just like this. Tried re-installing it, no use! Bump for this old ticket that was never answered and probably never will...

I thought MicMute stopped working after the Windows 10 Creators update, but then I noticed that my microphone got deselected under the Devices menu. Reselecting it restored functionality. Perhaps this tip will help others....
Better behavior would be to auto select the default OS mic
Oh, one more tip: I dislike the black Mic Off icon as it is invisible on black background of task bar... I tweaked my icon to be gray instead.
I'm also having this. When I micmute the notification comes up that it is muted, however in a program like audicity that is recording the microphone is still recorded. Toggling the micmute on and off makes it mute just for a second while it thinks its switching, you can hear it click on and off in the reocrding but the mic continues to record when the notification says it is muted. i have windows 10
