after reply, at wrong message

hi.  any ideas why this might be happening?  after i reply to a message
in +inbox, i end up not at current message, but at first message in
folder?  if i look in .../inbox/.mh_sequences, i see (among other things)

unseen: ....
header: 726
----

my sense is that this does *not* happen in other folders (though i don't
reply to message in those very often).
