messagedaemon

The messagedaemon (msgd) is a program that receives short messages over http on ipv4 or ipv6 and displays them round-robin. It uses a supported display (currently all 4x20 LCD/VFD, USB/RS232). It features a mini web server using libmicrohttpd to submit messages but also configuration of the display and the daemon itself.

Supported displays are currently:

  • Droids MuIn USB LCD ("muin" driver)
  • Sure Electronics 2004 USB LCD ("sure" driver)
  • CrystalFonts CF634 USB LCD ("cf634" driver)
  • CrystalFonts CF635 USB LCD ("cf635" driver)
  • Matrix Orbital 4x20 RS232 VFD ("matrix" driver)
  • Dreambox dm7000 LCD ("lcd" driver)
  • bare tty testing driver ("tty" driver)
  • curses virtual display ("curses" driver)
  • gtk virtual display ("gtk" driver)

I think this will compile and run without "configure script" on

  • intel/amd linux x86_64
  • intel/amd linux i386
  • ppc linux (means dreambox 7000 in this context, you will need to install the enigma sdk and change the paths in the Makefile for it to work)
  • mipsel linux (means any enigma2 dreambox, you will need to install an "image" development environment for the binaries and change the paths in the Makefile)

Not all devices all supported on all architectures (see Makefile).

You need to have libmicrohttpd (development) packages installed. For gtk you also need the "standard" gtk development packages.

Last but not least: you need a complete C++ building environment, including STL and BOOST. The resulting binary will not need shared libraries for STL, BOOST and libmicrohttpd.

Usage: see msgd --help. When running, connect to port 8888 with a web browser. Click on various buttons to find out how to automate (using curl) tasks.

Use this command line to add a message (using POST-method-style variables)

curl -s --data-urlencode "id=<id>" --data-urlencode "value=<message>" --data-urlencode "expire=<seconds>" --date-url-encode="<freeze>" http://<host>:8888/insert</host></freeze></seconds></message></id>

Use this command line to add a message (using GET-method-style variables)

wget http://<host>:8888/insert?id=<id>&value=<message>&expire=<seconds>&freeze</seconds></message></id></host>
