Touching Two Meshes Without Any Overlap

Hello,
Excuse me if this is a really basic question. How can you move meshes extremely close to each other (i.e. touching each other) while making sure there is no actual overlap/merging between meshes?
Again, sorry if this is a really basic question, but I need to be sure for this project!
