There are a few shortcuts for the reasonably fast switching:
If you press ctrl when clicking on the eye icon, only that layer will remain visible
If you press alt when clicking on the eye icon, all layers will get visible
Very useful after you turned all layer invis using the previous option and want to avoid
clicking on all of them...
shift just invert all the visibility status (e.g. you can toggle between two set of mesh)
