I had the same problem. Just downloaded MeshLab, uploaded Laurana50k.ply and tried to export in U3D format but it crashed. I repeated another two times saving at different folders but the problem persisted.

Same problem here: Meshlab 1.2.3 under OSX 10.5.8 always crashes when trying to export as U3D, even for the sample meshes and default settings.
