Dear MESA-USERS, I am happy to announce the birth of the newest member of the family of mesa instrument papers, MESA3. It emerged with a length of 43 pages and a weight of almost 13 MB. The parents are recovering after a prolonged, intense, and sometimes painful gestation period, culminating in 4 days of nonstop labor that reduced the aging 1st author to a state of muttering "I'm too old for this" (he's doing better now, thank you). http://arxiv.org/abs/1506.03146 As typical proud parents, we of course have lots of pictures and movies. Just as one example out of many, here's a mesa/star run of explosive nucleosynthesis after the core collapse of a 15 Msun model, showing the results of fully coupled evolution of structure and abundances using a 204 isotope net with implicit hydrodynamics including shocks. The infalling iron core has been excised at 1.50 Msun; the composition discontinuity at 1.52 Msun is a left over from energy injected during the initial 0.05 seconds to launch the shock. The moving burning front reflects the position of the strong shock as it races outward during the first half second after the explosion, leaving behind a newly created layer of ni56.
