But you are running a numerical simulation, and there are endless ways for it to do non-physical things! So when you see something like this, your first guess should be that there are numerical problems. And the first thing to try is to see what happens if you use smaller timesteps and/or small mesh cells. Many (most?) numerical problems can be fixed by using more timesteps and more grid points.
