Hello All, I have the mdb-queries utility spitting out sql for queries in JET3 databases (there is a small glitch with JET4 which I am working on still). I'm looking for some JET3 (Access 97) test databases so I can further test my utility. Feel free to send them directly to me at lle...@ma.... Thanks. -- Leonard Leblanc |

Unfortunately, this is still something on my todo list. The documentation will be added to the source code and extracted with gtkdoc or doxy. In the meantime, the sample programs are probably your best bet, most of them are small enough to be considered "fair use" if they are looked at and gleaned from. Even if not, I'm not out to sue people for using the libraries... Word of warning though. The API will not be fixed until we publish a version 1.0 of MDB Tools, so while I'm not going to change things willy nilly, the API is a little unstable for the forseeable future. A better idea if you need a stable API would be to rely on the ODBC driver (which gives you the SQL engine anyway). I hope to have an API reference in the coming months though. So I know this sounds like a wussy question, but is there any documentation for the various MDB API calls? I know I could look at the source for the included tools, however this work is for a comercial product, and the tools are GPL, while the library is LGPL, so technically looking at the GPL tools for examples on how to use the API could be considered derived work. I am of course willing and able to share and enhancements / bug fixes I make to the MDB tools library, it is just that including GPL code in a comercial product gets my upper management nervous. Pointers and advice are greatly appreciated! |

It appears that when compiling PHP, this time it compiled against iODBC rather than DB2Connect or unixODBC. This page should help out in compiling PHP to use unixODBC. It is a little out of date, but steps 2, 3, and 4 should be essentially correct. http://www.unixodbc.org/doc/php3.html If unixODBC is installed in the default place, you can put odbc.ini and odbcinst.ini in /etc or perhaps /usr/local/etc. odbcinst.ini contains *driver* configurations (e.g. mdbtools, MySQL, DB2) odbc.ini contains configuration for System DSN's. $HOME/.odbc.ini contains configuration for User DSN's. If I used any terminology you are still unsure about, I would be glad to go into more detail. -- Jeff Smith --- Shannon Sumner <SS...@co...> wrote: > Hello all, > > I still could use your help. Actually, iODBC is broken. We have a global (g_mdb_sql) used for the lex/yacc stuff and for whatever reason iODBC didn't like a global in a shared library and just didn't work right. I'd like to have a resolution on this at some point but there are more important fish to fry. Re: ODBC. IFAIK, DB2 CLI is API compatible with ODBC but only optionally uses a driver manager (direct linking). So, the trick here would likely be to compile PHP with --with-unixODBC and *not* with --with-ibm-db2 (from memory, may have the option a little wrong), and then configure unixODBC with the so library for DB2 (I can probably look up the proper file tomorrow at work, but you may be better off checking the unixodbc mailing list archive). Sorry, but this is the extent of my knowledge on the subject. Brian On Thu, 25 Mar 2004 09:09:47 -0800 (PST), Jeff Smith wrote: > > OK, I am finally up to speed. Hello list, First, let me say that this is a great project. It is the answer for those of us who have to deal with access tables but don't want to do asp. I would also like to help out but would need some suggestions as to how... That being said, here's a problem that I've been having: When I use mdb-export on a 84,000 record table, I get the following error "./mdbsql: line 22: 17536 Segmentation fault" (mdbsql is the shell script name). It seems that the failure happens at the 22nd record in the table at the 4th column (if that means anything). Any help would be appreciated.. Here are the stats: Redhat ES 3 mdbtools ver 0.5 mdb file = Access 2000 Thanks, Wade W. OK, I am finally up to speed. After rereading your original message, I see that while mdbtools and unixodbc are fine, the issue is that PHP is using the DB2 Connect libraries rather than the unixodbc ones. To my knowledge, mdbtools has only been tested against iodbc and unixodbc. Unfortunately, I have no idea how DB2 Connect stores DSN information. Is there a free version (preferably for i386 Linux) of it available that could be used for testing this out? -- Jeff Smith --- Shannon Sumner <SS...@co...> wrote: > > Hello, > I'm using Bryan Mills post located at > http://bryanmills.net:8086/archives/000099.html > <http://bryanmills.net:8086/archives/000099.html> to connect PHP on my > Linux Server to an Access database located on my network. OK, you say "I can get MDBTools to connect to the database". Which tool did you use to test this? If you are confident that mdbtools is connecting, the next link in the chain is to check unixodbc. The easiest way I know to do that be run "isql GAL". If it comes up without warnings, that means that part is working, and you may immediately quit the program. I did some quick analysis on the MSysQueries table and from what I could see it did include all of the necessary information (at least on the basic queries that I was trying). I wasn't sure if this was how the queries were handled by jet(3|4) or if they were given there own page in the database (query pages could simply be the data page(s) of the MSysQueries table). I may move forward in trying to use the MSysQueries table since I hit a road block with trying to pull any relevant information from the page returned in entry->table_pg for any given query. Any thoughts on this from the list? I like your idea of porting some of this functionality over to the mdb-sql utility to allow the execution of queries directly. I will keep this in mind as I am working on figuring out exactly how queries work. On Tue, 2004-03-23 at 20:28, br...@br... wrote: > Excellent! Excellent! I started looking at this probably a year ago and shelved it to work on other things. Glad to see somebody picking up the mantle. As I recall the MSysQueries table had everything needed except something (operators?) were stored as enumerated values. Hard to remember, it's been a while. A cool feature along these lines would be to allow queries to be executed as stored procedures in the SQL engine. So, issuing "exec myquery" would build a query tree (with or without the intervening SQL, although certainly with SQL is easier on the first pass) and execute it. Of course, the mdb-query program is invaluable for porting to other databases (be careful where SQL-dialect specific language comes up) and as a general tool. I have come across that singer while googling my name. No relation to me though. :) -- Lenny On Tue, 2004-03-23 at 08:35, Jeff Smith wrote: > P.S. Strange... I was looking through my CD collection the other day, and > I have a CD from a singer named Lenny LeBlanc. |

I have not had a chance to test it, but this looks to be a pretty useful tool. Hopefully, I can test this soon and give you some feedback. -- Jeff S P.S. Strange... Hello List, I've started work on an mdb-queries utility. The idea behind the utility is to allow the extraction of queries in SQL format. The results could then be piped to mdb-sql for execution. I currently have it listing the names of the queries that are in the database when no query name is passed. When a query name is passed the utility dumps the querys 'page' in hex format (along with some other information from 'entry'). At least, that's what I think I'm doing. Some review and next steps from another (experienced) developer would be appreciated. -- Lenny |

In _SQLFreeStmt, please add these definitions: struct _hdbc *dbc = (struct _hdbc *) stmt->hdbc; struct _henv *env = (struct _henv *) dbc->henv; MdbSQL *sql = env->sql; and inside the fOption == SQL_DROP block, add this call mdb_sql_reset(sql); This is needed for my SQLTables implementation which I should be submitting some time this week. -- Jeff Smith __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Leonard, I know that what works for one person doesn't always work for another, but I will tell you how I started out in open-source development just in case it helps. The first open-source project I did development on was TinyCOBOL. I knew C pretty well but knew squat about COBOL, so I set out to learn it. I got a couple of books on discount and started trying things out. Whenever I would run into something that did not work, I would dig into the code. If it was something simple, I would write up a patch and send it to the list. When I started looking at mdbtools, I only knew a little SQL and absolutely no ODBC. If you do not know either SQL or ODBC, I would say find some good references online or in print. Then start trying out the examples using mdbtools (for SQL testing) and unixODBC (for SQL and ODBC testing). If you run into something you don't understand, I am sure someone will be able to help you out. -- Jeff Smith > --- Leonard Leblanc <lle...@ma...> wrote: > > Hi Jeff, > > > > It would be nice if I could start with a bug fix to get acquainted with > > the project. > > > > I should also say that this is the first time that I have decided to > > help with an open-source project so I am new to how open-source > > development works.
