While I await cvs write access I have uploaded the current code as a bug titleled Java Port: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=960527&group_id=2294&atid=102294 _________________________________________________________________ Best Restaurant Giveaway Ever! I ported mdbtools to java so that java programs can easily use it without the hassel of setting up mdbtools, unix odbc, mdb-tools odbc driver, jdbc-odbc. instead a pure java jdbc driver may be used that does not require setting up. For more info visit: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1068644&forum_id=6688 I'd like to contribute this code back to the project. Could someone set me up with a module in cvs with write access? or is there someone willing to let me send changes to for them to check in? Also could someone add a section to the front page announcing the java port and how to obtain it? Hi all, I finally attached a MS Project mdb files to the bug (896696) that I posted a while ago. It seems sourceforge requires a file be less than 256K and this one was about 260K. I've gzipped the file, and it worked this time. Anyway, could somebody test out this file on their system and see if they get the same error. Running mdb-export to extract the MSP_TASKS table would be great. I would appreciate any help on this matter. -Frank Guarino ===== Frank D. Hi there, I've just grabbed the latest CVS sources for mdb-tools and tried again to access a rather large (150 meg) .mdb file. This time though, instead of coming up with errors, I simply get nothing. mdb-tables returns a blank, (I know the names of the tables in the database) but when I try to execute mdb-export I also get nothing. It simply prints a newline and returns me to the prompt. The database is a JET3 (mdb-ver finds this ok) but I cannot get ANY information out of it. At least in the previous version I tried I got an error. ;) Anyone else seen this? Any ideas? Ack, I always forget to "cvs add"....argh. I'll take care of it when I get home this afternoon. A difficult piece of the API pie is that I am also working on adding support for MSDE files, and my thought is to have a two layer API. At the top layer is everything most people need such as open, close, fetch, sargs. Anything one of the util program would normally do. This will be the same API for MDB and MSDE. Then there are additonal functions that may be MDB specific. I'm not sure how I want to deal with this yet, it'll probably become more obvious as I do more work on MSDE. Brian, With regards to Michael's patch, it appears that the changes to existing files were applied, but the new files were never added: libmdb.pc.in and libmdbsql.pc.in. I would do it, but I already deleted the patch from my queue when you said it was applied. As for the API stabilizing: The first step is figuring out what the current API is, i.e. declaring what is public/private. Of course, you have already begun this process with your block comments in the code. As someone who has waded through my fair share of undocument source code, I applaud this effort. Michael, Thanks for the patch. It is greatly appreciated. -- Jeff Smith __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Win a $20,000 Career Makeover at Yahoo! I grabbed the CVS copy last week, but was unable to get it to compile, seemed to me like autogen.sh was not generating the Makefiles properly. The 0.5 release however I have re-compiled to allow the gmdb2 gui to list the MSysObjects table. However, when I click 'Data' button to list the data in the table, it segfaults in a memory allocation attempt while adding items to the clist array. Let me know when you fix it, so I can try again. If you know how, please try the version out of cvs. If you don't want to mess with that, what has helped in some cases is to move that block from /etc/odbc.ini into $HOME/.odbc.ini Sometime in the near future, Brian will likely release a new version. -- Jeff Smith --- LABAT Francois <lab...@ma...> wrote: > Hi, > > I have this error (Warning: SQL error: <«ò@lò@¸, SQL state 00000 in SQLConnect) > when i try to access my database (Jet3) under linux. > > My odbc.ini in (/etc/) > > [basegc] > Description = Microsoft Access Database of Dogs > Driver = MDBToolsODBC > Database = /home/sisco/basegc.mdb > Servername = 127.0.0.1 > UserName = > Password = > port = 5432 > > I ve installed mdbtools (0.5 version) from > http://bryanmills.net:8086/archives/000099.html. Hi list, got the tools compiled (finally) with the help of a lexer fix I found in the list archives (Jeff's I think?) and the file can be read. Unfortunately, I have discovered that a couple of the fields are large objects (Images I think, judging by the program). The mdb-export seems to just output these as large numbers, but not large enough to be the whole image. Do binary objects get included in an export or is that just silly because of it being a text file. Is there a way to get the data into some other format? I seem to remember reading that you could export into other database formats. Probably any of them would do as long as the binary data is all there. Also, I am getting a segfault after only a few dozen rows. I include the output below in case it helps anyone. the problem is: Unhandled ole field flags = ffff Segmentation fault mdb-schema outputs the following for the table in question: DROP TABLE Exam; CREATE TABLE Exam ( ID Long Integer (4), Patient_ID Text (40), TestType Text (100), TemplateName DateTime (Short) (8), Date Text (2), Duration Single (4), Eye Single (4), LensSphere Single (4), LensCylinder Memo/Hyperlink, LensAxis OLE, Comments Long Integer (4), Data OLE, AnnotationData Long Integer (4) ); mdb-export outputs: ID,Patient_ID,TestType,TemplateName,Date,Duration,Eye,LensSphere,LensCylinder,LensAxis,Comments,Data,AnnotationData ,"","","","",,,,"",,,,-805253120 ,"","","","",,,,"",,,,-805253120 ,"","","","",,,,"",,,,-805253120 ,"","","","",,,,"",,,,-805253120 ,"","","","",,,,"",,,,-805253120 <snip: many more the same> ,"","","","",,,,"",,,,-805253120 ,"","","","",,,,"",,,,-805253120 ,"","","","",,,,"",,,,-805253120 ,"","","","",,,,"",,,,-805253120 ,"","","","",,,,"",,,,-805253120 ,"","","","",,,,"",,,,-805253120 ,"","","","",,,,"",,,,-805253120 Unhandled ole field flags = ffff ,"","","","",,,,"",,,, Reading LVAL page 0002eb row num 0 row start 10 row stop 4095 row num 10 row start 256 row stop 256 Segmentation fault Any ideas? I realise that since I have modified that skip-deleted flag, that I may be reading invalid data and really pushing sh*t uphill, but I thought there might be a way to get it to just skip the busted rows because there are another 3000-4000 rows to come that may have good data in them. (That's if I can get the binary data out too!) Thank you for your patience and time, I'll donate some of the money I get from this to the project if I'm successful. -- Have a Nice Day! Mike |

Hi, There is indeed a "deletion flag" for rows in an MDB database. However, we've always approached it from the opposite end of trying not to read them. I'd be curious to see how this works out, I don't quite fully understand the process by which Jet deletes rows, I just know how to deal with them once they are there. You may try this: bring down the source code for mdbtools. in the file src/libmdb/mem.c find the function mdb_alloc_tabledef() after the memset add: table->noskip_del = 1; now, you'll also need to turn on the old brute force reads, define the variable SLOW_READ export CFLAGS="-D SLOW_READ" ./configure make now you should have a copy of mdbtools that will read any page that appears to be owned by the table and will read deleted rows on those pages. Hello List, Just want to find out if anyone is currently working on code to export/view the forms inside the databases. I am currently working on a large project to migrate from access to apache and am a fairly skilled C programer. I want to find out where the code stands, and what needs to be done still. Thanks. Hi people! I am a little off topic here so apologies in advance, but this list seems to be the only place I can find people who understand the inside of an mdb file. My problem: I have a client who is running an application with data in a couple of mdb files. A great many patient result records have inadvertently been deleted (due to a cascade delete setting in the relationship between tables I think). Is there a way for me to use mdb tools (or anything else you know of) to undelete records? I think I remember someone here saying that records are not actually deleted, but only marked as such. If that is so, is this reversible? Can I just somehow unmark them or are there other complications? I am willing to export them all to text and find some other way to import them back in again if there are index issues or other such side effect from a delete. Perhaps I could export all deleted records in a given table to a text file and fix them there? Any help greatly appreciated because they don't have a backup! (Complicated and sad, sad story.) -- Have a Nice Day! Mike |

At this point, I believe I can easily integrate the functionality of mdb_alloc_handle and mdb_free_handle into mdb_open, mdb_clone_handle, and mdb_close. I feel that consolidating the functionality of these two layers into one would be a very good thing. I wanted to clear this change through the list though. Just to be sure you've understood: 1) mount your Windows share (where there's your Access db) 2) configure /etc/odbc.ini to point to your Access db, as an example [test] Description = Access db on Windows box Driver = MDBToolsODBC Database = [path where you've mounted Windows share]/[Access db].mdb Servername = 127.0.0.1 UserName = Password = port = 5432 3) enjoy your Access db with your application :-) Thx, bye, Gismo / Luca - -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [mdb-dev] Using mdbtools odbc to connect to an mdb on a windows box? Hi all, I've just checked in new implementations for the mdb_crack_row[34]() routines. These should get all the details right regarding deleted and added columns in all permutations for both Jet 3 and 4 databases. As these routines are rather central to the functioning of MDB Tools, I'd like to get some feedback on any crashes or regressions as well as if this fixes problems some have experienced with mdb-export having nonsensical data. If I don't hear any bad news on this, I have a memo field bug to straighten out and then I'll be releasing 0.6pre1 and moving on to (finally) get mdb-import working. Cheers, Brian |
