Problems with Umlaut key on non-US / German keyboard layout

I have a German keyboard layout and when I hit "Umlaut" keys (ä,ö,ü), Midnight Commander gets immediately killed. This makes the internal editor unusable.
I use Windows 10 and Midnight Commander 4.8.24.
Any help here is highly appreciated.
