I've posted a snapshot of packages compiled out of yesterday's Gestation: ftp://skarpsey.dyndns.org/snapshot/i486/ A primitive depmod-style dependency list is posted at: ftp://skarpsey.dyndns.org/snapshot/deps.i486 Whoever takes on the install script will probably find this handy. ;-) Hopefully, everyone can expect i486 snapshots to be updated on something close to a daily basis. Alpha snapshots are on a "when I get around to it" basis, unless we somehow get a much faster Alpha compile host. Note that there are some packages in there of limited or questionable legality (namely xvid, libdvdcss, and xine packages)--not baldly pirated stuff, just stuff where some licensing details need to be settled. I'm not sure how we'll handle "non-free" or "not-quite-distributable" packages at this point, especially with us doing most of our work in the public eye. -- Kelledin "If a server crashes in a server farm and no one pings it, does it still cost four figures to fix?" |

Currently investigating the Mandrake installer, and what it might take to adapt it to the InceptionOS way of doing things. It may not be quite trivial. Also need someone who knows how to package an install CD. Now that I'm investigating things, it _might_ actually be quicker to just write Bourne/bash scripts invoking the dialog utility, as Slackware does. Given time, I may be able to whip up some form of demo this weekend. Also...I'm working on scrounging parts for an x86 compile host. Basically planning a 1u 1GHz P3 about as small or smaller than a Cobalt RaQ. That should be enough horsepower to do near-daily Gestation builds. -- Kelledin "If a server crashes in a server farm and no one pings it, does it still cost four figures to fix?" |

Well, mainly, we'll want a web site with news postings (much like we had with GeekLog), an anon-FTP server, and bugzilla. We'll also need to give developers SSH/SFTP access for uploading... That's a good start right there, and with the exception of bugzilla, shouldn't be too hard to set up. We will, of course, need the hardware racked up first, which is what held us up before IIRC. > During the server outage I took the opportunity to get the > bandwidth set to 10mbit - so it should be quicker than before. > Let me know if I should mirror PlanetMirorror, or if we'll do > it the other way around. Cool :) We should probably have ftp.inceptionos.org as the master repository, and have PlanetMirror mirror that. > See above, If we need an rsync server running I'll add it the > list of stuff to set up. I don't believe we'll need an rsync server, and if we don't need it, we definitely shouldn't install it. It might be kind of odd having a "mirror" serving as our master repository, but it will work until we get our own broadband FTP server available. Only problem I have, is I want to first figure out how to notify PlanetMirror when the master repository changes. Terry, Okay. Thanks. Wonder what could have broken it? Okay, you'll all going to like this...maybe. I have found a site where we can put up a free online store and the company (CafePress.com) will produce all the products. I have setup a store, but we need the iOS logo to be created and such so I'll post another Help Wanted ad on SF as I do have some artwork that someone else worked on before to give to the Graphic Designer who wishes to help with iOS. You can find the store -- with no products yet -- by following the following URL: http://www.cafeshops.com/inceptionos/ As, this would be a good way to fund iOS and get things we need that cost money...because as you know everything can't be free. We also have to find someone to reinstall GL for the site, I have setup a static HTML page stating that our web site is experiencing difficulties at the moment. Terry, When you have time can you please upgrade OpenWebMail as I have v2 sitting in my home directory on the shell. Thanks. Kelledin, This sounds good, but to write out own interpreter, we'd have to find someone as I know Kelledin you are busy with the packages and work, Terry is just busy with work -- wish I was foing that right now :( -- and I have no idea about anyone else because they hardly ever post anything to the list. And as you know Enrico was also programming the installer, as it can still be found in his directory at: http://www.inceptionos.org/~phantom/devel/ Unfortunately, Enrico does not seem to be working on it anymore...so if anyone wants to take a look at the source for that as well I am going to post a Help Wanted ad on SF again. While scoping about for resources on programming setup dialogs, I came across the DialogML standard: http://dialogml.sourceforge.net/ This looks like a big part of what we need for IOS setup--an XML-based markup language that takes a lot of the work out of setting up dialog boxes. It's great for setup, and it's perfect for certain extra features I had envisioned for the IOS setup engine. The catch? DialogML just that--a markup language. It needs an interpreter front-end to be of much use. The default one that comes with it (STARTME awk script) is dreadfully ugly and rather non-intuitive. The DialogML author is currently working on a better curses-based interpreter, but that's not even available in any form for public consumption. In the end, I think that whatever we do for an installation tool, DialogML should be part of it. If we proceed based on that, we hvae two choices: either wait for the author to finish the curses-based interpreter (and hope it's sufficient), or write our own interpreter. -- Kelledin "If a server crashes in a server farm and no one pings it, does it still cost four figures to fix?" |

Kelledin, I know the public would want to place with it, but the problem is only the really die-hard Linux users will want to build InceptionOS from scratch...we need an installer which Enrico was working on but as I've said before and I'll say it again he's disappeared and not responding to emails at all; so we need to find someone to work on the installer and I've still had no replies to my ad on SF about it either.
