The website says the calculator uses Maxima.

Whether step-by-step solutions help a student learn math or not depends on the student. I had a calculus student who used this integral calculator occasionally when he couldn't compute an integral, but he thoroughly revised the steps in the answer until he understood. He did pretty well on his final exam.
