Thank you for this input.  It does appear that this is the root of the
dissatisfaction expressed here.  I take your comment as one vote -- if I
hear from a few others I will get a 2.6.13 release tarball out within a
week.  I would then suggest dropping support for 2.6.12.  I volunteer to
clear out any gcl conditional cruft to that end.
