One thing I am not sure about: SBCL grabs a fixed-size memory block at startup (I think it was half a gigabyte) and works on that memory. GCL Malloy's half of the physical memory your current machine has installed on start-up, instead. On machines with many gigabytes of RAM that might be one reason if gcl runs out of memory later than sbcl.
