One of the problems with automatically formatting in the Right Way is that the way to explain an equation might depend on what you want to say with this equation. For example: Does the problem you work on better match x^2+2*x+2 or (x+1)^2+1? Or x(x+2)+2? As soon as you work on more complex examples there might be even more options that make more sense than that...
