It seems to me that you're using the correct procedure. Does that happen 
in Wxmaxima? Is the behavior the same in Maxima run from a terminal? To 
see if it's just a problem of display, try putting something such as "a: 
2$" in maxima-init.mac and see whether a has a value of 2 right after 
you start Maxima.
