Dear Tomio,

Thanks for testing my last attempt at the problem - which seems to have
widely backfired. Sorry for that.

I have now reverted the portion of the change that had to do with
opening new files - but not the portion that had to do with opening
empty windows. Let's hope that this was a good idea.
