This would make the tarballs work unconditionally, which is a good thing
- but it would hide errors we might have introduced into the autoconf
files.

Normally I claim that hiding errors is never the Right Thing. But if
this step drastically reduces their relevance, as well...
...how to define "Right?"

At least the current tarball seems to work on linux even if I have to
admit that linux tens to be good-natured in this respect since it for
examples provides apps with themed icons if they forget to bring their
own...
