I did recognize that ceiling() and floor() took - I think it was
actually milliseconds - on my I7 computer and therefore contacted the
mailing list after trying to apply floor() to 100 lists that were a
million elements long.

Actually the overhead maxima normally imposes on complicated operations
currently under normal circumstances tends to be surprisingly low so
maxima currently is up to big numerical tasks.
