Attach the file to this bug report so that others can look at it. How did you create the saved file?

created the file as  .wxmx   regular command line input - not batch or anything
      Attached as untitled-err.wxmx

    Robert Dodier - 2014-08-22

Good news! I have patched the wxmx files and attached the modified files to this report. I can open these files successfully with wxMaxima -- give it a try.

The problem is that the files contained escape characters and apparently that makes the XML document unparseable. (WxMaxima saves wxmx files as zip-compressed XML documents.) That is really a bug in wxMaxima -- it saved a file that cannot be reopened. WxMaxima should clean up any output to ensure that it is always parseable by the XML parser.

But to work around the problem, maybe you can avoid inserting escape characters into the wxMaxima input.

ok thanks. So do you also report the bugs to the WxMaxima place or wherever ? I dont remember at least not intentionally inserting any ' escape characters' into the files. What exactly were these particular escape characters ? So perhaps also do you think this would not have happened had I just opened and saved them as just .wxm rather than .wxmx files?
I don't suppose there is any way you could instruct one as to how to patch or fix the files myself should it happen again?

could not load a saved file and lose all my information. If there was some reason for that then maxima should never have saved it. error was:
XML parsing error : "not well -formed (invalid token) at line 87
so now how do i edit the file such as in wordpad so I can load the file ? Otherwise I have lost all my work.

As wxMaxima is developed as a separate project, it is best to report bugs directly to their issue tracker: https://github.com/andrejv/wxmaxima/issues
Be that as it may, I'm glad that we have been able to resolve this specific problem.

I don't know how the escape characters (i.e., ascii 27, ESC) were put into your file. Presumably you typed them accidentally.

Patching the files is a little involved and I can't recommend it: I extracted the compressed XML from the wxmx file, then erased the escape characters, then recompressed it. Discovering that the problem involved those specific characters required a bit of investigation.
