_cntr.so has been deprecated (it might take a couple of releases before we remove it entirely). _contour.so has a newer, better interface and comes with a python wrapper. Don't know if that is an issue at all for you, just noting that is the case. I might also suggest looking at scikit-image, as I think it has some contouring algorithms that might be easier to link to.
