Hi Paul I'm aware that matplotlib has moved away from the jet map, which in most cases I would agree is a good thing. My map is not a replacement for the jet colourmap, or any other colourmap. My map is the "inverse" of the diverging colourmaps, seeking to enhance small changes around a certain part of the colourmap (normally the centre, but it can be set by the user). In order to show the difference I have generated four test plots. Since I don't want to fill your inbox with attachments, they can be found at http://sudodolphin.blogspot.no/2014/03/creating-colourmaps-enhancing-small.html with a description.
