I've noticed that running the tests with the debug flavor of python
2.6 and 2.7 makes the interpreter crash: I've reported
https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/issues/1309 which seems
similar to https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/pull/1054
