If your app is wxPython based then I would use the attached as a test
case and not the simple_plot one.
Then if you don't use wxPython Unicode 2.6.x then you need to follow
Andrea's work around.
matplotlib/backends/_wxagg.pyd
to
matplotlib/backends/_wxagg not used.pyd
