None that I can see; if you seem to be running into such a limit, then 
it sounds like a bug.

No, but if you are making a lot of them, say over 100, then
performance will start to suffer, and you may be better off with a
LineCollection.  plot (which creates a Line2D) is good for making a
few lines with possibly very many points each, and LineCollection is
good for generating lots of line (or segments) with not too many
points each.
