well... as is usually the case, as soon as I admitted defeat and asked
for help, I found the solution. ;)

plot = scatter(x,y,s=s,c=c,alpha=0.3)
set(plot,'linewidth',0.0) # <--- this is what does it
----end----------
maybe someone else will find this useful, or at least google will pick
it up for the next time I forget. heh.
If there's a better way, I'm interested to know it, but this works
quite nicely.
