Hi Garrett, Thanks for reaching out and writing to us. You have very admirable educational goals for making use of games to reach out to the kids and I like them. We don't have a lot of active developers right now in mars-sim but for sure we would welcome suggestions and help in making it better. For instances, our UI needs some overhaul. At some point, we were discussing how to implement an interactive help tooltips / tutorials / or inline system to make mars-sim easy to grasp. Also, we hope to document more about our design concept.... I look forward to collaborating with you on mars-sim and your Mars Colony project and hope to be of some kind of help to you. Sincerely, Manny On Sat, Oct 1, 2016 at 2:17 PM, Garrett Hour <gar...@gm...> wrote: > Hello, my name is Garrett and I am interested in helping you develop your > game > > I am the founder of Hour Interactions, a game design company with the goal > of making the world a better place. Hello, my name is Garrett and I am interested in helping you develop your game I am the founder of Hour Interactions, a game design company with the goal of making the world a better place. The games I make are intended to improve real world systems such as education and healthcare. Currently I am working with Nolan Bushnell and others on a game which turns online school into an MMO <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vjj6rZYfFyZt_q7Xv2QLNlw-jFJY08n4j8cc07qss6Y/edit>. More relevantly, I am developing an educational framework designed to get kids excited about a future in space by placing them in a Mars colony simulation where they find real applications of STEM academics <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Dn9xKb5PxBujG864AOAwg6tzwIOA8ZbgTT2qITVvfmw/edit>, currently being used in KO School, a Texas charter school. I am very interested in working with you on your game to raise public interest in Mars colonization. You'll find my linkedin below. https://www.linkedin.com/in/garrett-hour-75a60280 Looking forward to hearing from you, Garrett Hour |

Also, as I looked up SoundConstants class, public final static String SND_ROVER_PARKED = ""; do we intentionally want no ogg file for the following case when a rover is parked ? It could play a "zzzz" sound effect that signifies the vehicle is "asleep" :) at least better than none IMHO ! Hi Lars, I've whipped up a quick fix to mute BOTH the background music and the sound effect at the same time when pressing ctrl-M. Will commit in a minute. I know it's NOT really a complete fix since we should have separate control for each. Also, I feel like creating a new instance for OGGSoundClip is an overkill. I could have used a boolean or the value in UIConfig to track separate on the volume of the background music and the sound effect. So this is really just a quick fix. Regards, Manny On Wed, Sep 28, 2016 at 11:54 AM, manny kung <man...@gm...> wrote: > Hi Lars, > > What does it take to mute the volume of both the background sound track > and the sound clip at the same time ? > > I was looking at AudioPlayer class yesterday. > > In play() method, we have > > try { > currentOGGSoundClip = new OGGSoundClip(filepath); > currentOGGSoundClip.play(); > } catch (IOException e) { > e.printStackTrace(); > } > > Question : do we really want to make a new instance of currentOGGSoundClip > everytime we call play() ? > > > > Regards, > Manny > > On Thu, Mar 31, 2016 at 1:40 PM, Lars Christensen <la...@na...> wrote: > >> Yes, also OpenAL is very old. >> >> Right now SourceForge is down, so I can’t commit. Hi Scott/Lars/Barry, I'm about to compile the next 3.1.0 snapshot version and upload them to SF. Since the last snapshot build, I've thrown in critical fixes such as aborting a vehicle mission, and avoiding duplicate settlers' name. I'll also comment out those springboot maven artifacts in the pom.xml for the 3.1.0 release because they will add nearly ~30 MB to the jar. When running it under linux. there are still a couple of issues. 1. for now, it checks whenever linux os is used, it won't use nimrod look & feel. So I'll need to fix the column headers background color. 2. the javaFX stage popup in the settlement map tool doesn't work under linux. Can you guys test the .deb binary to see if it can be run since I don't have debian distro setup ? Did I overlook anything obvious or important that you want to roll into this snapshot preview ? Regards, -Manny On Fri, Sep 16, 2016 at 3:28 PM, manny kung <man...@gm...> wrote: > Thanks Scott ! How have you been ? Thanks Scott ! How have you been ? I just updated some screenshots in SF. But for some strange reasons, the old logo can't be updated. Do you think we should update the 3.08 branch in svn to 3.1.0 as well ? What else should we mention in our project website ? I'll update it later. -Manny On Fri, Sep 16, 2016 at 8:53 AM, Scott Davis <mar...@gm...> wrote: > Hi Manny, > > I set MarsProject_3.1.0_SNAPSHOT_build_3713.zip as the default download > for the project. Hi Manny, I set MarsProject_3.1.0_SNAPSHOT_build_3713.zip as the default download for the project. To set a file in the project's file section as the default download, click the "i" icon to the right of the file and in the lower right check all of the check boxes for the appropriate systems it should be the default download for. I find it takes a minute or so for the web site to switch over to the new default download after doing that. Also I made you an admin on the SourceForge website so that you can handle file releases and such. I've been absent from the project for a while now and I want to make sure you guys have the administrative rights to do what you need to do with the project and the web site. Hi Scott, Can you create a new milestone tag called "3.1.0" in https://sourceforge.net/p/mars-sim/tickets/ for ticket submisstion? Currently we have only two milestone tags, namely, 3.07 and 3.08 on the left panel. If it's okay with you to skip 3.08 and move directly onto 3.1.0, we should add 3.1.0 tag when someone submits a ticket. Let's march forward! -Manny |

Hi Scott/Lars, How have you been lately? Question: how do I change the latest download file from MarsProject_3.07.zip to MarsProject_3.1.0_SNAPSHOT_build_3713.zip in Sourceforge's File tab? https://sourceforge.net/projects/mars-sim/files/?source=navbar SF reported that there have been 153 hits in downloading the old 3.07 version and 21 hits in the new 3.1.0 snapshot. I'm hoping that by getting users test-play the new features in 3.1.0 snapshot version, we can get users more involved as they provide feedback/comments before we release the final 3.1.0 version. Hi Scott/Lars, I just compiled the latest build 3713, name it as MarsProject_3.1.0_SNAPSHOT_build_3713.zip and upload it onto the following new folder : https://sourceforge.net/projects/mars-sim/files/mars-sim/3.1.0/ Note that it doesn't include the source files and it's good for both windows and macOSX. If you run it in a mac, mars-sim's menu bar will be shown up on the top of the screen like a native app, instead of loading up the menu bar on the window frame. Cheers, Manny |

Hi all, NASA is open sourcing its mission control framework written in node.js. https://nasa.github.io/openmct/ https://github.com/nasa/openmct You can even run its demo on your browser. It's a real world mission control app with very clean UI. Perhaps there are something we can learn from it for mars-sim. Manny |

Hi Barry, I'll like to try out your approach of building and starting Web UI. Question 1: can you start the sim before deployment without maven? Before we redesign mars-sim to be deployed as a persistent sim world for users to log in, Q2: how does the user start the local sim on their computer? Do they have to have spring boot pre-installed and maven pre-installed? We still want to package mars-sim in such a way that a user only have to click on the icon to start the sim. The use of ThemeLeaf is interesting as it is a server side template approach along the lines of JSP and later JSF. These do have their drawbacks specifically increasing server load when supporting multiple concurrent users. I've never really loved this approach as it relies on more knowledge of HTML. However I can see that the benefit of pre-defined templates is pretty compelling. For me the work I've been doing my current playing was to experiment with using the React framework with Bootstrap utilising a web service backend. Essentially separating the simulation logic from the application side whether that be browser or mobile app in the future. That's the type of things I do in my day job. The mars-sim project was something I knew from the past and was a good seed for trying out some ideas. I've become unbelievably busy with work this month so I've got no time to contribute at the moment anyway. As an aside the work I've played with can be used running locally as well. Hi Scott and Lars, I've tested the change from 3.08-SNAPSHOT to 3.1.0-SNAPSHOT in my local copy of mars-sim. It looks like involving just a simple change in all pom.xml. So I'll commit in an hour or two if no one objects to it. Manny On Fri, Apr 15, 2016 at 12:51 PM, Lars Christensen <la...@na...> wrote: > Hi Scott, > > Are you OK with this? Hi all, Since we are going i18n in mars-sim, I thought you may want to read this. http://utf8everywhere.org/ In the past, I always thought UTF-16 is supposed to be better than UTF-8 but the author of this article arguments in favor of UTF-8 instead. See if you like some of the things he pointed out. Anyway, character encoding has been a somewhat confusion subject for me. Manny |
