Game won't start on my computer. I hear music for a second and than it stops. It also draws black background with colorful dots and lines over open applications on other workspaces. I have to minimize and restore those applications to restore their look.

OS: Ubuntu 10.10

Terminal output:

Are you using the open source drivers for your graphics card (which one by the way?) or the proprietaries?

Looking at this log I can suppose that he uses an ATI (AMD) Radeon videocard with open-source drivers.
Now, when I've compiled M.A.R.S. and enabled shaders in options, I receive a segfault. However I've managed to see the same black background with colorful dots and lines.
    Here is the output:
    (gdb) run

I think I've compiled the game without debug support so this information can be useless.
However, if you need my configuration: I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 alpha, ATI 3850 videocard (ATI Technologies Inc RV670PRO [Radeon HD 3850]
    ), OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.9
If you need additional details just ask me :)

Maybe it's something about SFML we don't initialize properly. It seems that it segfaults when trying to draw a text, and texts are the only thing we directly draw using SFML. Can you please try to uncomment in src/medis/text.cpp line 31-53 and line 78? You won't have any text then in your interface, but mybe it helps finding the bug...
Have the Open Source ati drivers become better? When I tried them a year ago I had big problems... But when they support OpenGL 2 shaders should work, shouldn't they? Is there an GLSL version string? (I'm using proprietary NVIDIA drivers: OpenGL version string: 4.1.0, OpenGL shading language version string: 4.10)

Well, I think I've commented those lines correctly and recompiled the game, however, there is another segfault:
    http://pastebin.com/2MhM0kUF
I'm 100% sure open source drivers have become better, but as far as I can see mostly for newer cards (ATI 5xxx and 6xxx series; as ati gives code to support these videocards )
Speaking about shaders, I can upset you -- OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
May be something has changed in mesa 7.10 which was released yesterday but I haven't updated yet.
The situation with open source drivers you can see here -- http://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature (and on related pages)
So if M.A.R.S. doesn't work properly with some videocards I suggest you to warn about this.. somewhere :) on the webpage or in readme/etc.

I've made some tests right now.
If I disable shaders in mars.cfg, the game launches (without text as I've commented those lines in text.cpp -- see http://img524.imageshack.us/i/marst.jpg/ )
Anyway I receive a segfault when I exit game:

    AL lib: ALc.c:1818: alcCloseDevice(): deleting 25 Buffer(s)
