No

A PPP Server Link Layer would enable PPP client only
devices to connect to the IIgs.
While PCs and Macs are not necessarily PPP client
only, it would provide an alternative method of
connecting a PC or Mac to the IIgs.

So gs1 connects to gs2 via PPP or perhaps DirectConnect,
then gs2 connects to a Mac say via MacIP? Why is this
better than gs1 connecting straight to the Mac via MacIP?

I don't follow your logic. Perhaps you didnt understand what I am trying
    to suggest.

    Example network:
GS1 using Marinetti with PPP Server
PC or Mac with nullmodem connection to GS1
Connection to GS1 made by PC or Mac using PPP Client (e.g. Dial up
    networking on PC)

This would let GS control the initialisation of the link layer (eg to use
PAP instead of MS-CHAP) and give ye average user way to establish
file sharing between GS and PC using TCP/IP as protocol.

Ahh, OK. Apologies, I keep thinking Internet gateways.
Interesting idea. Is there a need for it do you think?

Well, I think someone would use it if it was there.
Who knows what application it could be put to (connecting
Palm handheld device to a IIgs for example).
Next step: develop it so that the server task can establish
    connections without user intervention.
