Those who want to make a very different game based on the Marathon engine. I side with #1: Improve Marathon, but keep the important stuff that makes it better than other games. OpenGL is good because it makes the graphics better, jumping and headshots are bad because they interfere with existing maps and change the gameplay in unexpected ways. If you want an ultra-realistic game play Deus Ex. If you want to have a lot of fun, play Marathon. I would like that to remain true. >> We don't have to make an entirely different game out of Marathon. Jumping and Headshots aren't bad. They're good. They just don't 'fit in' with the current Marathon content. OpenGL is good, and Deus Ex is good. If some people actually think headshots, jumping, fall damage, and all of that good stuff are bad, let's dump the current build out as a final release and continue on without compatibility worries to block progress. Also, when you said "If you want an ultra-realistic game play Deus Ex. If you want to have a lot of fun, play Marathon", playing ultra-realistic games aren't another type of emotion, they just make you feel more like you're really in that situation. Deus Ex is fun, in fact, it's more fun than Marathon (this is my opinion). However, we wouldn't need to copy Deus Ex to make Marathon competitive with it (on the enjoyment level). We don't need to make it where you have to look at a weapon and press the action key to pick it up. We don't need to make it where you can hack computers and hot-wire security systems. We don't need to make it where police gun you down for breaking and entering. We just need to make it more believable. I'm thinking about a happy medium between Marathon and Deus Ex. Realistic, but not so difficult that some people would just walk away with frustration. Hannibal |
