#490 auto map causes crash under open GL

I just got a new PC and tried playing marathon on it, but hitting the map key causes the game to crash. No error message or anything, it just goes to the game folder.

This only occurs when I am using openGL. Aleph One Log.txt and stderr.txt report no problems. I have tried several versions of Aleph One, none of them work. I have played several scenarios and the problem persists.

There is no slowdown caused by using software rendering, so I don't think it has anything to do with the game.

My new PC has the same OS as the old one, which played the game with no problems.

OS: Vista x64 Home Premium

The crash report indicates this is occurring in the Intel graphics drivers. Try upgrading those to the latest versions. If that doesn't work, switch to software mode--ATI or nVidia are recommended for OpenGL.

Thanks for the help. Software mode works fine and I could not find a good driver, upgraded or downgraded.

Also, will Windows 7 fix this problem or is there an older version of aleph one or a newer one planned that will work with my drivers?

Unfortunately, OpenGL drivers for integrated video cards are generally poor in Windows (is this because OpenGL is a direct competitor to Microsoft's own Direct3D API?)--your best bet is to put a cheap nVidia or ATI card in, if you can. I doubt WIndows 7 will improve the situation any.

Is the DirectDraw/DirectInput checkbox on or off in Aleph One's graphics prefs?

Unfortunately, my pc is a laptop, so a new graphics card is not an option.

I usully leave DirectDraw/DirectInput off. I don't know what it does, and it does not look like it makes any changes in terms of graphics or perfeormance. Under OpenGL, it doesn't display anything on screen, but I can still hear the game, and it still crashes when i hit my map key.

PS I have been considering switching to Linux and would like to know what type of Linux Aleph One is compatible with, and if it would fix this problem.

Windows 7 fixes a lot of the issues I was having with opengl applications. Especially with dual screens (it doesn't black out the second screen anymore).

Will the game still crash when i open the map under windows 7?

I just installed windows 7, and it solves all these problems, although loading sometimes takes longer than usual.

Other than that, everything works fine.
