Actually now I'm trying this on a router (Netgear g router) that does 
not have WEP enabled.  I am still unable to set an ESSID even when 
following the order outlined in the FAQ.  I've also tried setting static 
IPs, etc, but no dice.

Kismet and the iwlist commands continue to work fine.

Any more ideas?
