Reading http://www.vollink.com/gary/deb_wifi.html, I suggest you remove the auto ath0 line. The allow-hotplug ath0 should be enough, so that ath0 gets configured, when it is available. However, the page seems to be based on the old driver, that gave you ath0 immediately, whereas the new one just gives you wifi0. Thus the plan seems to be as follows: Get hotplug to execute the wlanconfig ath0 create... when it loads the driver, creating wifi0 (I don't know how, but not in /etc/network/interfaces, so it should be removed from there) Then let ifplugd (I assume it is it that gets called by the allow-hotplug) detect that ath0 is up, and configure ath0 as per the rest of the entry in /etc/network/interfaces. As for taking ath0 down again (the post-down), I would think, that that too should be done via hotplug, since it would now be it, that is responsible for putting it up in the first place.
