Use it and >you not only support people who steal code they have no rights >to, but you risk severe penalties should Atheros ever get >pissed-off, or have their hand forced by some regulatory >agency (ala the FCC). I've seen you say this several times and your argument is absurd. I can just imagine the headlines now: "Atheros sues customer for using product." They might go after the people who produce the HAL. If you help with the Open HAL then you might get what you deserve. But, they will not go after their customers for several reasons. How can they claim you violated the copyright on their software if you have no way of knowing you are doing so? I've never heard Atheros comment on the issue. Besides, it's just not good business sense to sue paying customers unless it is absolutely necessary. I think the main reason Atheros holds on to their source code so tightly is so that if someone like the FCC goes after them, they can pass the buck on to the person who A) stole their HAL or B) paid for a licenced use of their HAL source code. Otherwise, they could care less, so long as people continue to buy their hardware. In any event, I think people would be far more interested in why you think the net80211 stack is better than the d80211 stack. It's a far more constructive conversation, also.
