I'm the only Mac coder in an office full of Windows engineers, so they all know when I've arrived at work! You should know that that sound is the report that the Mac has passed its Power On Self Test. If it fails there are various unpleasant noises that are played instead. > Is it possible to boot Linux from a USB drive without modifying the Mac? In theory, it is possible: all Intel Macs can boot from USB (AFAIK). But the legacy BIOS in those Macs does not support booting from USB. So you'll have to boot using EFI. I've been trying to do that on-and-off, in the hope to get my trusty "rescue USB key" to also work on my Macbook Pro, but until now I haven't had much success, tho it seems that some people do get to boot Linux via EFI on their Mac. Any information about this would be welcome, Stefan |

I'd like to connect my old Macbook Pro to an old TV to watch DVDs. I have the "DVD -> Video" adapter from Apple which gives me an S-Video and a Composite video connector. But I can't seem to figure out how to actually use it. I'm using the `radeon' driver, and when I plug the adapter into the DVI connector, xrandr tells me "Ouput DVI-0 is not disconnected but has no modes". I followed the advice on http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonTV and did: xrandr --addmode DVI-0 800x600 xrandr --output DVI-0 --mode 800x600 xrandr --output DVI-0 --set tv_standard ntsc but the last step results in an X protocol error about using a bad name: and indeed `xrandr --prop' does not list `tv_standard' as being one of the known properties. This is using Debian testing with X.org server version 1.6.3 and radeon module version 6.12.2. Has anybody managed to get it to work? Stefan |

What do people use to wake p their Macbook Pro when the machine is in a place where you don't want to open it (e.g. it's used as a desktop, connected to an external display and keyboard)? I've enabled everything I can find in /proc/acpi/wakeup, but my machine still doesn't want to wake up upon pressing a key or a mouse button. It does wake up upon inserting a USB device, tho, so maybe I could find some kind of special USB device with just a single button that lets me connect/disconnect it (having to unplug&replug a mouse isn't my idea of fun). In reality, tho, I'd really prefer to wake up my Macbook Pro with a remote control. Has anyone managed to wake up their Macbook Pro with the Apple Remote? Stefan |

Heya, So looks like some kind of incompatibility with how sound hardware is initialised by the two operating systems-- I've been running Ubuntu on a Macbook Pro 4,1 for over a year now, and it seems as soon as I got sound working in Ubuntu (long ago), it stopped working in os x. Quite simply, it's not in my output devices anymore -- just "Digital Out", with no controls. Oddly, though, sound does work fine in mac os when using headphones. Does anyone know what might cause this behavior? Is a reinstall of mac os necessary? James |

Hi All I'm preparing a custumized live-dvd based un ubuntu, in this .iso i have installed some software that needs 3d acceleration graphics driver. the procedure i'm using to get it working on a standard PC is : - boot from dvd - log-in - go in text-mode : "ctrl+alt+F1" - stop gdm : "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop" - install the driver (i have a copy for both Nvidea and Ati propietary drivers in a directory : /home/user/driver) : "sh NVIDEAxxxx.run" - follow the instructions on screen - restart X : "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart" Unlucky this procedure do not works on my macbook pro 2.2 , beacouse the ctrl+alt+F1 is not detected by the system and try to stop X in a terminal session, i'm not able to restart it (i got a black screen) please let-me know if you have any clue about. if you want i can burn a new .iso including other specifics hardware- driver also provide you the .iso to test-it. thanks for any suggestion! regards, Massimo. |

Hi Tino, I got kms working for me on a Macbook 1,1 together with an external monitor via DVI. I use kernel 2.6.31-rc2, Xorg Server 1.6.2 and the intel driver 2.7.99.901. I have a similar line in dmesg: "[drm] TV-16: set mode NTSC 480i 0", seems like it deals with an imaginary TV there. Everything works with this setup, faster than ever. Got the following message repeated in dmesg though: i2c-adapter i2c-3: unable to read EDID block. i915 0000:00:02.0: DVI-D-1: no EDID data regards, Jannis Tino Keitel wrote: > Hi folks, > > I'm currently trying to get Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) to work on my Mac > mini Core2 Duo, using the latest kernel from git, Xserver 1.6.2 and > intel driver 2.8-rc2 (aka 2.7.902). Hi folks, I'm currently trying to get Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) to work on my Mac mini Core2 Duo, using the latest kernel from git, Xserver 1.6.2 and intel driver 2.8-rc2 (aka 2.7.902). I looks like the DDC/EDID stuff needs to take care of some strange behaviour of the DVI port, at least in my setup. My question is, if just my setup is affected, and other people can use an LCD connected via DVI together with KMS, or if it is a general issue. In my case, I get a black screen and this line in the kernel log: [drm] TV-10: set mode NTSC 480i 0 Regards, Tino |

I could probably get my hands on a machine that has that hardware, but first would probably need to make a livecd so things are easy to test.(or just download the latest ubuntu) Justin P. Mattock |
