I have been all over the two sites and i cannot figure out how to download it. I used to have a free version, then the computer crashed, and now its gone. With all my data, I think. It may be on my back up, not sure how to find it. Please help. Thanks. KAti

The program on this site is not available for public download yet. There was a private beta download that was available a long time ago (Preview 3).
The original program that runs on the the old Classic Mac OS 9 was produced by the LDS Church and is no longer available. It was not free, but cost between $6-35 depending on when it was purchased.
If the program you were running was the green one, that is the old Classic version (called PAF for Mac or Family Records 2.3.1).
As to how to get whichever version you were running back, you'll need to give more information, like which Mac OS you are using (10.3, 10.4, 10.5), how you did your backups, what happened when your computer crashed, etc.

I had a Dell Computer with all my Family history that I have done so far saved in PAF. We bought a Mac yesterday and I love it so far. I am starting to stress about the genealogy though. I even had a apple technical support guy helping me. He found your site and I am confused. A lot of places say MAF is free. But, then here it says not available? I don't want to download windows if I don't have to. Thank you for your time and knowledge.

I wouldn't put much faith in the Mac PAF solution. The LDS Church is beginning to roll out the "New Family Search" which is an online tool that allows everyone to share the same family tree. This will replace PAF completely over the next few years. Our temple district was recently put on the new program and so far we've enjoyed it a lot. As a member you can see the ordinance data easily and know what ordinances have been done, what duplication there is, and you can source everything quickly. Some of the cooler features are the timeline and map views which show you events from the persons life and also where the events took place. It really helps to see all of our ancestors events on a map and how far some of them traveled even in the early 1800s.
If I were you I would just make sure you have your ancestors well sourced and wait for an invitation to the New Family Search.

So far as I can tell, New Family Search does not permit the adding/display information about living persons, such as my children and grandchildren (and their spouses). PAF does, and I find that information useful.

The new family search does permit the adding of living persons. However this information is not shared with anyone else. When the person dies then the records can be combined and straightened out.

New FamilySearch is okay but it's useless if your internet connection goes down. Having just moved house and spent six weeks without internet i still believe there is a need, and personally still want a copy on my hard disk. And in case you are wondering, yes I also have a paper copy as well.
