John Smothers: There is someone who has posted a compiled version of Andrew's build, and you can get it here: http://www.porkrind.org/emacs/index.html Btw, I have a Titanium and it really is the best thing I have owned in a long time. OS X still has some quirks, but compared to OS 9, it is a lot more stable and you can take advantage of a lot of the open source world (like emacs, of course). Andrew has done good work on the Emacs port, it works incredibly well. -Jeffrey On Monday, April 15, 2002, at 12:47 PM, mac-emacs-users- re...@li... wrote: > Send Mac-emacs-users mailing list submissions to > mac...@li... > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/mac-emacs-users > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > mac...@li... > > You can reach the person managing the list at > mac...@li... > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Mac-emacs-users digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Hi John, The version of Emacs that came with Mac OS X can only run in a terminal and will not run with its own GUI. It is basically a patched version of Emacs 20.7. My patch to compile Emacs 21.1 on Mac OS X will run both in a terminal and as a GUI application (with its own windows, menu bar, scroll bars, and so on). I only distribute a source version so you'll need to compile the it yourself. You'll also be able to find binary versions on the Web prepared by other people. There are also emacs-on-aqua and a patch to compile XEmacs for Mac OS X. The latter requires XonX (X Window) to be installed to run. Please contact their respective authors/maintainers for information. Andrew. |

I have not used mac-emacs or mac ever, I'm a unix guy with a love of emacs. I'm about to buy a laptop, and now that OSX is based on unix, I would love to give it a try. So I ventured to the local CompUSA to play with the G4 powerbook. The first thing I did was to open a shell and run emacs. To my surprise it ran in terminal mode, like running it on solaris when the DISPLAY variable is not set. I assume emacs also runs in it's own window in a "gui-mode". Is this true? Sorry for the newbie question, but emacs is a MUST before I buy any computer. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hello, I don't know if this is a general problem or my specific problem but here goes: in the interest of getting latex to work I downloaded Enrico Franconi's distribution of a latex-enhanced mac-emacs. The disk image mounts perfectly well but, for whatever reason, double-clicking the installer does nothing. It seems to initiate a process but then stops and nothing happens. Thanks, Roy Roy Cutler |

Hi All, I have the META key working as the option key on my TiBook, thanks to the mac-command-key-is-meta variable. However, when I run emacs from the shell (emacs -nw), neither the option nor the command key work as the META key -- only the escape key works. Anyone know how to get the option key to function as the META key when Emacs is run from the shell? I'm running 21.1.30.1 patched for OS X. Thanks, David -- David Wheeler AIM: dwTheory da...@wh... On April 8, julius ross writes: > I have got auc-tex working with mac-emacs - including (most of) the > TeX-commands. Has anybody else done this? Otherwise if anyone is > interested I will say how it can be done. I'm distributing (since a couple of months) at http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/~franconi/mac-emacs/ a "LaTeX enhanced mac-emacs" (MacOSX) for people who don't want to compile mac-emacs and don't want to hack elisp. It includes many interesting features in addition to the standard mac-emacs build: most notably, you can drag-and-drop files and paths are correctly seen from within mac-emacs. This is obtained with a wrapper around the code. As soon as the final release of mac-emacs will come out, all these tricks will become obsolete. Many packages are included (among them, auctex, reftex, ...) Tomorrow I will upload the new version 1.4, which includes a "universal" site-lisp directory which - in a "plug-and-play" fashion - works with various emacs on the mac and on linux (20.7, 21.1, 21.2, on X11 and aqua). Moreover, a full new set of menu commands are included to easily interact with tetex and mac applications. So, wait for the new version! cheers -- e. Enrico Franconi - fra...@cs... Check the version of your Developer Tools and Mac OS X. Developer Tools for Mac OS X 10.0 will only work with Mac OS X 10.0 and those for 10.1 will only work for 10.1. You will need to install texinfo 4.0 (see the readme.txt file) before installing Emacs. Check whether the installation of texinfo works. Andrew. |

I've managed to avoid this problem by using -- until I can figure it out -- a very minimal =2Eemacs file containing the necessary lines to get Latin-1 characters. No matter what I do, though, Faces won't show as they should. Let say I type the French word "O=F9" (where) and want it to show in bold-italic. What I get is a no bold and not slanted capital "o" but in a different font and a bold-italic "=F9" (\'u). Also, the text properties (the Faces) are not saved. If I save the file and then revisit it again, everything shows in the default. It looks like Latin characters and ascii (0-127) characters are not using the same font. Faces use to show correctly in Emacs 20.6 on the same machine. I'm new to this. Hope I'm not distracting you with something obvious. Thanks pierre |

Hi, Is it possible to type your E-mail message using the `mac-roman' coding system directly? If you do that, files created should be readable immediately by other Mac applications. There should be some information in the FAQ that comes with version 20.6 or in old mailing list messages. I haven't used 20.6 for quite a while; version 21.1 has been available. And of course I've been only using and working on the OS X version. Andrew. |

I use mac-emacs (v.20.6) to write and send my mail. As you know, when asked to send the mail message, mac-emacs will call Eudora to perform the task. This works all right. But if I sent text which contains French characters these won't show correctly in Eudora. Usually, if I type a text using French characters in mac-emacs but have to visit it in a different editor, I use a small utility called 'Xlator' which will translate ISO formats into a Mac readable file and vice versa. Using this software, I can convert emacs file to a BBedit readable file, for instance, and back again and characters will appear correctly in both editor. Is there a way to perform such 'translation' within mac-emacs that would allow me to send my French mail from within emacs without the extra operations? |

Many things such as the fontset `fontset-mac' and the `mac-roman' coding system are now already defined in lisp/term/mac-win.el. Try removing/renaming the .emacs file and then start Emacs. Also, Emacs must be started from the Finder at this time. There was a message earlier on one of the mailing list describing how to pass a command line option to Emacs. Please take a look if you need to do this. Andrew. |

Hi, I'm having a weird problem when launching Emacs.app. This is the error message I get: --- An error has occurred while loading `/Users/etrajano/.emacs': error: "Fontset \"-*-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-16-*-*-*-*-*-fontset-mac\" already exists" To ensure normal operation, you should investigate the cause of the error in your initialization file and remove it. Start Emacs with the `--debug-init' option to view a complete error backtrace --- I could not start Emacs.app with the '--debug-init' option. Here is what I get: [localhost:~] etrajano% open -a Emacs --debug-init 2002-03-30 11:52:25.780 open[9364] No such file: /Users/etrajano/--debug-init It seems that it's not possible do pass arguments to the Emacs App. I'm using Mr. Choi's .emacs file. The only difference is that I wrote the following line in it (set-keyboard-coding-system 'iso-latin-1) As I said, this problem is very weird, because when I type emacs -nw emacs starts in my terminal window *without* any problems. I'm an emacs newbie and just can't understand what is happening. Does anybody know what is going on?? TIA. Cheers, -- Ernesto Trajano de Lima M. Sc. Hi Piet, If you check the macosx-dev list at Omnigroup, you'll notice that other people are having problems with pty's losing characters too! Before that problem is fixed, please try the following. Compile pty support into Emacs (i.e., #define HAVE_PTYS in s/darwin.h). Then set process-connection-type to nil in .emacs (or lisp/term/mac-win.el). This will cause Emacs to use pipes by default. Ange-ftp will also work because it locally sets process-connection-type to t before opening a connection, causing pty's to be used. This is not a good long term solution but will let you use Emacs with ange-ftp and other packages that uses processes. Andrew. |
