Gotta get myself to that!!!) but I've never seen those applications you mention actually bundled-in the lxp package - I suppose they are something like "recommended but not mandatoryy packages"...? I actually use neither idesk nor xfe but rather rox to do the same as those two would, only better (IMHO) ! |

Hi, I downloaded "Look Win XP Desktop: icewm+idesk+xfe" package from sourceforge.net But as described, the idesk and xfe utilities were not present in the package. I just got binaries for lxp-icewm. Can anyone tell why the package of idesk and xfe were not present in it? Thanks, Siddharth |

Hey guys! I'm available to do those transltions now. But I need to know... Where should I pick up the sources to translate from? Should I just get the stable release sources or maybe some CVVS, SVN or such release? In the later case, where from (link)? Thanks, Jean Ackle |

However, I'd assume that'd set rox as the default desktop environment. Thus I removed the rox entry I had in ~/.lxp-icewm/startup, hoping it would nonetheless be started up automatically. That did not happen. Contents of ~/.lxp-icewm/.defaultdesktop is: rox Also tried with both nautilus and kdesktop. None seems to be set as default. :-( AND... something reallly odd: in my ~/.lxp-icewm/startup script, I have a line to play a login sound and it worked great til I started playing with the the "Switch desktop" icon... So I thought for some strange reason my ~/.lxp-icewm/startup script might have stopped being executed. So I added conky to it just to see if that was true but conky DID get started! Now I'm really confused! I DO have sound though - I actually tried executing the sound-play command from xterm and it worked. I can't figure how this lack of sound playing from the startup script might be related to the Switch desktop icon and this whole issue but there WAS a relation in time... And maybe you guys can figure something out of this...? > > >> 2.2. If you use The GIMP to re-size these icons then you will end up with a transparent background for the icons in question. [ NB: The main (root) menu uses 32x32 icons, the taskbar and sub-menus use 16x16 icons.] > 2. I'm using the ROX-Desktop which poses two questions: >=20 > 2.1. You can do that by entering the following command in an xterm:=20 ps ax | grep icewmbg and it should show you that it (lxp-icewmbg) isn't running. Once it sets the background image it exits. You can lessen the amount of RAM being used by converting 'wallpaper.png' into a JPeg image (GIMP is your friend ;-) ) and modifying the entry for the background in=20 /usr/share/lxp-icewm/themes/LookXP-Human/default.theme, it's near the bottom in the 'Desktop' section. Congratulations for a great job to all the developers of lxp! It looks good, feels a lot better than the original ice-wm and overall provides a much pleasant experience! Well done! :-) Now the questions: First off, I'm using Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS Dapper Drake... 1. Both my Thunderbird and my Pidgin apps are local installs, not from .deb packages, thus installed in /usr/local. For that I had to add a few paths to the icon-path list - no prob with that. BUT as you can see in the attached picture, the icons for those apps do not include their "transparency", i.e., they have a "boxed" background color around them, which BTW does not happen with the icons for the same apps in the toolbar./usr/local/thunderbird/icons/mozicon50.xpm I'm guessing the concerned icons are: * /usr/local/share/icons/hicolor/50x50/apps/thunderbird.xpm (symlink pointing to /usr/local/thunderbird/icons/mozicon50.xpm) * /usr/local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/pidgin.svg (this is the automatically selected one as, before I added the scalable version of the Pidgin icon, I could get no icon for it at all) 2. I'm using the ROX-Desktop which poses two questions: 2.1. If I select it from the "Switch desktop" tray-applet, I'll get a default, almost blank ROX desktop, whereas if I invoke it with "-p=jean" it will then load that particular pinboard which I had already previously setup. Is it possible to edit how (with what command-line like option) will the "Switch desktop" applet call ROX? How? I currently have ROX running from the ~/.lxp-icewm/startup file I copied from ~/.icewm so this is not an actual problem for me but it does diminish that great applet's usefulness... :-( 2.2. ROX is taking over the desktop background (as it always does even if you don't set it up to load any image or color) but I kind of like the background lxp comes with. Only... I could not find where it is located (so I can use it with ROX). Even issuing "dpkg -L lxp" and "dpkg -L lxp-icewm" gave me nothing to work with. Also, in plain ol' icewm, I used to just shut down icewmbg as it was doing nothing useful anyway. But when I do that in lxp and without the ROX desktop... I get that exact same lxp background! So I guess you're loading it in some other way...? Would be nice to be able to free up the memory used by it if needed... For the translations' offer: I've seen of your sourceforge.net page lxp is presently translated only to English and Spanish. I can translate it to Portuguese and French too if you like. Nontheless, I have experience in translating applications only with Firefox (to pt-PT) and by that I mean receiving HTML and XML files and returning the messages in there translated. I have no real experience with say gettext or whatever you use (I've spontaneously done one small one a while back for a very small project - the developper never came back to me or, that I'm aware of, used it). Also... Not sure in what time I can do it - this month's going to be quite busy for me... Cheers! Jean Ackle |

I have been using icewm for years and came across a patch by Thomas Holder that turns the desktop switching buttons into a proper pager. By that I mean it shows mini window inside the buttons. I've attached an image to illustrate. The patch can be obtained from here: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1394863&group_id=31&atid=300031 It is the one thing I miss when using lxp and something I would *really* like to be included in future versions of it. Hi, yesterday I posted a reply regarding write-ups of some tips for lxp, specifically XP themes for, as the subject says, FF and TB. Now, I've no idea which themes the poster (Eric Rothoff) was refering to but after doing a quick search at addons.mozilla.org I have located 3 themes for both FF and TB that offer silver, green and blue versions. I wonder if these are the ones people want as far as visual integration with Lxp?=20 They can be found here: Silver for TB: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/895/ Green for TB:https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/893/ Blue for TB: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/891/ Silver for FF: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/894/ Green for FF: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/892/ Blue for FF: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/890/ and judging by the simplicity of the procedure, is it /really/ necessary to do a write-up on how to install themes? I mean its your basic click to install, restart FF/TB and you're set to go. --=20 Myles Green Geek by nature. Unix by choice. Hi Folks, I've been assembling a set of "Tips 'n' Tricks" specific to lxp however this is proving to be a bit of a challenge. Due to the wide variety of distributions available "out there", a trick that works with distribution "A" doesn't necessarily work with distribution "B" or "C". Having said that, I'm putting the finishing touches on a preliminary set of "T 'n' T" covering Debian (and Debian-based distributions), Fedora Core (and FC/RedHat based distributions) and OpenSUSE. I need to do a complete re-install of my Debian-based setup - I forgot that I *WASN'T* in VMware full-screen mode when I tried something - but once that's done I'll set up VMware with Debian, Fedora Core 6 and OpenSUSE VM's so I can verify that things work with at least those 3 distributions.=20 Getting back to the FF/TB themes, I'll do a proper writeup of this process as soon as I get my host system reinstalled and configured. I should have something posted to the site by Saturday March 3 24:00 UTC at the absolute latest. Regards, Myles --=20 Myles Green Geek by nature. Unix by choice. Hello Eric, First of all thank you for your comments. Second I'll cc this mail to lxp-users list. I think the title bar of the window is out of the desktop when you start xfe, try move it by clicking with the right button over the taskbar. I think it could be fixed in lxp-icewm winoptions. I'll try to investigate this issue. 2) You are to add the themes to Thunderbird and Firefox manually, right? Yes you have to add these themes, I think would be useful write some documents about this tricks and publish it into the lxp site. 3) Do you have a way of changing the resolution of the desktop? Your comment > on the buttons were very small and hard to read. You can use an external program like gnome-display-properties. I don't understand what do you say about the comments, if you are refering to the tooltips of the taskbar, this is configurable in your $HOME/.lxp-icewm/prefoverride i.e: TooTipFontNameXft="verdana:size=12" 4) Do you have a menu editor for the start button? My menu was pretty messed > up. (But it usually is when you install a different desktop.) No, lxp has not any menu editor, you have to use a text editor 5) Do you plan on adding some type of control panel for setting like XP? It could be posible, but first it is necesary choose adecuate programs for each task, make the packages and make the menu or the adecuate launcher 6) Do you have a particular Linux distro that you prefer? (I currently like > xubuntu, but like most, it has some drawbacks.) I enjoy all, but I use RedHatEnterprise or CentOS in production servers, and Fedora or ubuntus in desktops 7) What is your target hardware configuration? I use a cheaper Asus laptop Z53F 8) Where do you live? Madrid, Spain Well, I could write much more, but I think I will wait on that until later. > > Keep up the good work. > Sincerely, > Eric > Regards Manolo |

Hello, again. Sorry for the delay, but last months I was overworked, and I had not much time for lookXP. Also I was working in submiting patches to the official release of icewm in order to add my changes to it. Some of my changes has been included, but others are waiting and the process it is too slow. Now I'm doubtfull about what to do, I'm thinking in maintain my own branch of icewm and rename it in order to easily maintain the lxp package in official repositories of ubuntu fedora etc. Are good news that lxp works in debian, so I'll include it in tested distros. The new menu tries to show all applications that are in the HD, it searchs for applications under the folders /usr/share/applications and /usr/app-install/desktop then it distribute them according with the system configuration under /etc/xdg/menus and /usr/share/desktop-directories. It's dificult to accomodate it to every systems. The list of applications is huge, so icewm waste a lot of time the first time it's invoked, for this reason the default option for the menu generator is not to show icons for applications, you can force showing icons adding the parameter --icons=1. I'm planning to modify icewm in order to load icons when they are demanded and not when the menu is created (like does xfe, gnome and others). I'm working in order the user could create custom entries in his menu i.e: menuprog "Settings" folder lxp-menu-generator --icons=1 /etc/xdg/menus/settings.menu Switching between desktop is the more recent feature so I'm not tested it fully, it works very well with xfdesktop (it needs some entries in winoption file that lxp-startup includes), idesk also has needed some workarround, but nautilus some times refuses to load, and kdesktop looks to work fine but it needs something in winoptions in order to hidden it's icon in alt-tab menu. Let me know your experience with rox. Than you for your suggestion about the money, but at the moment I think the project need more help than money. I'll be pleased to include people (developers, testers, designers etc) in the project. Believe it or not I had just finished a net-install of Debian Etch when I got your email. Unfortunately it took me a little longer to restore all my files/applications than I thought it would. I just downloaded the .deb files a few minutes ago, installed them and I'm currently using LXP. > I'd like you try this release and comment it. > Thank you very much for your suggestions >=20 > Manuel Carrasco Well, I've only been logged into LXP for about 5 minutes so far but I definitely like what I'm seeing!! Very much indeed. The new menu is awesome, every entry (and there are tons of them...) has an icon and so far I haven't found any entries that 'don't work'. I'm not going to try them all as I would be here all night clicking on menu entries. I've just now spent about 10 minutes going though the menu starting applications and switching themes back and forth with nothing bad happening. Nice work.=20 I'll keep 'torture testing' LXP on Debian Etch for the next few days but I think it will be pretty safe to say it's been tested under Debian as well as Ubuntu/Xubuntu and Fedora Core 5 (I've tested it myself on those distros). Switching between idesk, nautilus and 'none' works well - I haven't installed Xfce yet but that should be completed pretty soon so I'll be able to play around some more <grin>. Would it be possible to add rox-filer to the already impressive list of possible desktops? I know there are a lot of people using Rox with Icewm so it might be a good idea to add it to the list. I'm going to be busy for most of tomorrow (Thursday) but I should be able to look through the configs later in the day and maybe I can hack out a patch to include Rox... we'll see :-) Anyway, thank you for your attention to detail(s) and for bringing LXP into this world, it's a very useful project. Have you thought about getting a PayPal account and/or setting up a bank account so that people could make donations to the project? I looked around the site but didn't see anything... Hello Myles Finally I've released lxp with: 1.- A new program in perl to generate system menus. This will replace icewm-menu-gnome2. 2.- A script to allow the user to select her favorite desktop (idesk, xfdesktop, kdesktop or nautilus). 3.- Support for .deb distributions 3.- Other minor fixes I'd like you try this release and comment it. Thank you very much for your suggestions Manuel Carrasco On 9/6/06, Myles Green <rm...@te...> wrote: > > On Wed, 6 Sep 2006 20:00:54 +0200 > "Manuel Carrasco" <man...@us...> wrote: > > > Please, test this procedure in your computer: > > 1.- modify the menu file manually and see that the menulist is grouped > > 2.- download new versions of icewm-menu-gnome2 and lxp and install them. > > 3.- delete your menu file > > 4.- login and see the diference > > 5.- let me know your results > > Hi Manolo, > > Yes! 1.- Now ubuntu, xubuntu and debian users can easily try LookXP 2.- Several changes done: - Some fixes in icewm and xfe - Some fixes in lxp scripts - lxp-menu-generator: is a completely new program that generates a menu with installed applications. It uses the system menu xml description files. This program will be a substitute of icewm-menu-gnome2 - lxp-switch-desktop: an utility that allows the user to change between desktops (xfdesktop, kdesktop, nautilus, idesk). Thanks Mauel Carrasco |

Take a look at this program, it's written in Python: http://menumaker.sourceforge.net/ You can download it here: http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/menumaker/menumaker-0.99.7.tar.gz It worked very well with Debian/Ubuntu but I get an error when running it on Fedora (any version): mmaker -v -f -t gterm icewm * scanning desktop...Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/mmaker", line 3, in ? import MenuMaker.CLI File "/usr/lib/menumaker/MenuMaker/CLI.py", line 227, in ? desktop = Prophet.Desktop.scan() File "/usr/lib/menumaker/Prophet/Desktop/__init__.py", line 153, in scan result.append(App(os.path.join(w[0], x))) File "/usr/lib/menumaker/Prophet/Desktop/__init__.py", line 266, in __new__ self.__setup__(desktop) File "/usr/lib/menumaker/Prophet/Desktop/__init__.py", line 286, in __setup__ super(App, self).__setup__() File "/usr/lib/menumaker/Prophet/__init__.py", line 265, in __setup__ self.setExename() File "/usr/lib/menumaker/Prophet/Desktop/__init__.py", line 329, in setExename self.testGoodness(cmd) File "/usr/lib/menumaker/Prophet/__init__.py", line 261, in testGoodness if _shStart.search(cmd) or _shComplexCmd.search(cmd) : TypeError: expected string or buffer Thanks, Myles -- I didn't know he was dead; I thought he was British. |

Hello, First of all, thanks for using and testing LXP. Please, send me the following information 1.- Operating system and version. cat /etc/redhat-release cat /etc/SuSE-release 2.- Application entry in menu file: cat $HOME/.icewm/menu | grep icewm-menu 3.- Execute the command that generate the Applications menu (see the result of te last command): icewm-menu-gnome2 --list /usr..... I'm not know exactly the structure of gnome menus in each linux distribution. I think that icewm-menu-gnome2 could be inproved. Other solution is to create a new utility to substitute icewm-menu-gnome2 probably done in perl. Hi, I thought I'd break the ice and be the first to post some comments here :) I've been using LXP for about a month now, ever since it was first announced on the IceWM list. Overall it's a pleasant experience, obviously a lot of thought has gone into it's creation. I have a bit of a problem with the default applications menu in that you get *everything* in one very long menu rather than broken down into sub-menus. Yes, I know there are a few solutions to this - a couple of IceWM-specific menu editors and a menu generation application called MenuMaker to name a few. I was wondering if there were any plans for improvement in this area for future versions of LXP? Thanks! Myles --=20 The other line moves faster. |
