All, (Especially you, Justin) I believe I've gotten sufficient material on the OpenFirmware bootup proceedure to make LSD capable of booting on OpenFirmware compliant machines. I will need the bindings for the ISA you want to port to. I have the bindings for PowerPC/PreP, and PowerPC/CHRP, and generic PowerPC. (The first two are derived from the last, which is more generic.) As long as the OpenFirmware client interface can be accessed by the kernel at bootup, from the return register, it is possible for it to begin to immediately interrogate OpenFirmware about what's where. (OpenFirmware it seems is very nice -- Instead of things like FreeBSD booter, or Grub, where you have to rely upon their data structures, and the allocated memory, and you have to be careful about stepping on their toes, OpenFirmware, instead returns all values to you from a client interface function library, and utilises NO machine specific addresses in the interface system. OpenFirmware also provides in the specification for a memory allocation system, such that you won't step on OFW's toes either!) If OpenBIOS is sufficiently progressed for the PC, and is BSD licensable, once the PowerPC port of LSD is underway, the OpenFirmware routines can be back ported. I would like to know if either of you have an extra handy NewWorld Macintosh kicking about to do periodic tests of LSD on. PearPC won't cut it for total development. -- ADAM David Alan Martin |
