PvP is an interesting issue with most games, and in my
opinion a game ceases to be an RPG once it drops
roleplaying. This is quite natural, and I believe 90%
of the problem is that the AI in games is simply not
upto spec. After all, look at Diablo 1 and 2, the AI
does not even offer the chance for any social
interaction. Other 3D games, even Morrowind, keep the
NPC's as cardboard cutouts, the only other game series
that actually becomes a roleplaying game is the Baldurs
gate series, and some of the other infinity engine games.

So, my firm blame for lack of roleplaying in games is
terrable AI, which in LRoH I'm working on very closely
to fix. This does not mean that PvP won't exist, it
will, as the game intends to be relistic, in the same
way that couterstrike has a friendly fire mode,
accidents can also happen.

Another thing that I also believe causes players to
move to PvP in droves is the fact that most games
simply have a lack of content, and rapidly become
boring if the players don't do something themselves.
this has been seen in the Sims Online where the place
is now run by several Mob families.... if PvP were
available, it would be Sim Gheto...

So, to address this issue of roleplaying and PvP, we
will allow both, but with consequences. The Ai will be
intelligent enough to remember particular players,
retreat, build cities, wage wars, trues, alliances etc.
The AI will also be able to carry out a limited
conversation, and actually roleplay along with the
player, so that you could join a group of AI creatures
and raid dungeons, defend places etc. As the AI's are
also saved, they will be similar to the players in
every respect, building up their skills, gaining Items,
and looking out for their own interests.

If the player simply appears, and kills everything in
sight, then they will find entire empires hunting them
down, and the game will be no fun for them. This would
enforce roleplaying very quickly. For any player,
fitting in with the society they are appearing in is
very important, and PvP against enemy empires is fine,
as is a war against an AI crreature that is causing
problems. But it also allows the player to become
friends with AIs, and for those AIs to help the player
when needed.

So, this game is a whole new kettle of fish, and I know
of nothing that follows this model with AIs having the
same level of abilities as the players have available
to them.

Very insightfull and true..... people move onto pvp because
there is nothing else challenging for them(see diablo 2) Like
really a fairly crappy character can beat diablo 2 no
    problem...
Have monsters that require more than one person to beat...
Like it would be imposible with even the best character... but
if you got a bunch of good characters togther it could be
done, that way there could be stuff that you could brag
about other than just "I've killed 1215231 newbies because i
    have nothing better to do........"

your comment has been noted, I guarantee that such
creatures will exist as a given, as beings such as the
powerful Lich will require entire Armies to destroy it.

Also, note that being part of an empire brings it's own
challenges, expand the borders, bring glory to your emperor
or king, battle your sworn enemies in a fight to the death,
aid your allies, build towns and cites etc.

All of these things offer plenty of oppertunities for some
very intersting situations to arrise, has your empire allied
with the goblin king against the threat of the Vampires? Do
goblins now walk freely throughout your lands, forever
friends? Or are you prehaps applying a gambit in the "Art
of War"? Where you allie, then conquer them once your
armies are within your city, before conquering the vampire
    threat?

I guarantee that there will be plenty to do :)

    Regards,
    Nuke Bloodaxe.

btw: don't expect all that to be in place fully by Alpha,
thats final release level stuff, but it will be getting
    around in the beta testing.
