[Loraytplayer-users] miro, searcher and player..

Hi (hard-working) guys

I've just come accross with a interesting app called miro (or
democracyplayer, i'm not sure about the name). Try it if you want, it's
included in hardy, just search democracyplayer.

For me there are three interesting things about that application :

  1) For any weird reason is written in PHP !, what hel.. ?. I think that
the most of the is html/javascript based and embeds a kind of web
browser. Are we looking at the future of desktop? who knows? ; )

  2) It could interesting take a look on how the search is implemented. It
seems they search a interesting set of sites, including video.google and
youtube of course.

  3) They don't play on fly. It's needed download the video before play
it. Well, we already do that, kudos fo us !

Maybe some ideas could be founded in this application.

Hi all guys !!!

Well, although you don't believe it we are growing!!!. And that is a
good news. Recently a great friend of mine joins our development team.
She is a really good developer and I think she can do great things to
improve our project. I know she is illusionated with our project and I
know she could do really great things when she is motivated.

But as the rest of the group she has no expierence in gnome and desktop
appps world in general but that's the point, we are doing that to learn
, isnt't it?

I think we got a really good idea to make loraytplayer a really useful
application and we should try to do it reality. It could be a great
application or at least we will implement a lot of useful code related
to integration of desktop and web... and guys believe me, web
integration is the future of desktop. Hibrid desktop, Online desktop,
... we could be part of that !!!!

Seriously, we are only a few newbies trying to learn but we should try
do it as well as we can.

I want to propose a roadmap. What i think we should do is , in this order:

   * Refactoring, refactoring and refactoring: Our codebase is not the
best and I had serious problems to add cool stuff like progress bars,
etc because our design is not as well as it could be. Do you remember
the little goear searcher and player developed by jazquez?, It is a good
design example.
   * GUI's redesign: Well, I really like it now but we will need a
better solution thinking in the feature because the app will search
several types of multimedia resources and in several services, and all
this stuff could be choose in the gui. Another thing could be use only
one window instead of a new window for each opened video or multimedia
resource.
   * A very important thing from my point of view is the design of a
puglins arquitecture that allows to add new searchable service in a easy
way. We should investigate a bit to choose the best solution. A lot of
gnome projects provide plugin systems which we can "steal". I really
think that if we get that other developers can add a new searcheable
service only adapting a former API like [1] [2] by coding a few lines
the we will have a great application.

PD.: A crazy idea!! we can organize a loraytplayer hackfest : ) (out of
workable hours by now) to work at least together at least a few hours.
