When I tried to do a daily rolling file appender with 0 set as the maxBackupIndex, it didn't act as I expected. I did a small mod which, when maxBackupIndex is set to 0, will open the current file in append mode.

Previous behavior would copy current contents to a .1 file. If there were several restarts, loss of log data would result.
